This project renovates approximately 18,000 square feet – converting standard stack space to a vastly expanded Digital Union facility. The Digital Union represents a pooling of some of the University’s best computer resources (both technology and staff) - serving as a common resource across departments and disciplines and reaching beyond the University (www. digitalunion.osu.edu).
The project incorporates significant technological infrastructure as well as a high demand for strong design. The project scope evolved over the course of the design to include the creation of a new coffee shop on the first floor as well as incorporation of a Learning Collaboration Studio intended to be a high tech classroom with ultimate flexibility including extensive use of wireless technology and state of the art video conferencing capabilities. Multiple user groups and 24-hour accessibility were additional considerations in the design.
The issue of way finding was paramount on many levels. This was addressed by the creation of a central space designed both as a place for informal meetings and chance encounters as well as a hub providing access to the various program spaces. A stacked wood screen wall made of ash defines the center space.
